Location and transport information

Located in the heart of Newcastle, Northumbria University offers a range of cutting-edge conference and event facilities for all occasions.

Newcastle is a very compact city so getting around is easy! It has one of the best integrated transport systems in the country, centred upon the Metro system, and the extensive bus networks.

Excellent bus and Metro services run between our two Newcastle campuses and we also operate our own free bus service during both semesters.

Our City Campus is a 15 minute walk away from Newcastle train station or a minute walk from the closest metro station.

A traditional, grand setting, The Great Hall has hosted numerous formal dinners, as well as corporate training sessions and can seat up to 120 people for a formal meal and 150 people theatre style.

Our £100 million, award-winning City Campus East development houses purpose-built and versatile spaces for conferences, talks, lectures and seminars hosting up to 400 people. The many rooms vary in size enabling conference holders to offer more intimate settings for smaller group work, as well as offering an open exhibition/networking space and catering area. These eco-friendly buildings are now part of the dramatic city skyline and provide the perfect venue to meet.

For a more contemporary space, our Hedley Suite houses newly refurbished facilities offering versatile, sustainable spaces that can be used for school groups, meetings, networking and exhibitions. 

Sport Central is a world-class, £30 million complex designed to hold competitive fixtures, international training camps, events, conferences and exhibitions. Sport Central’s centrepiece is a highly versatile 3,000 seat arena that can accommodate 360° seating, as well as theatre-style, stage formats, corporate dinners, and round table conferences.

Catering

Your event manager will help you to decide the best options for your event and liaise with our on-campus Catering team, advising on cost or bespoke menus for large events. We also offer a range of day delegate rates and packages as well as individual items to build a menu for your needs.

Our food and drink offer also aligns to a number of policies on environmental sustainability, Fairtrade and food waste. Further Information

AV Equipment and Support

Our room hire rates contain no hidden fees with the majority of rooms fully AV equipped with PC, screen, and projector, and all included in the basic hire fee. We will provide clients with a secure login and free internet access. Our free Guest Wi-Fi is available to delegates across campus with a speed of up to 150MBS. Lecture theatres come with lectern, handheld and lapel microphones and additional mics are available on request.

 

From the enquiry stage you will deal with a named event manager from the Venues team who will guide and assist you from initial contact, through the booking process and the logistics of your event from set-up to finish. Your event manager will be the liaison between you and the many University services you will benefit from such as security, IT, catering, health & safety and accommodation if required.

Virtual/Hybrid Events

Since March 2020 the Venues at Northumbria team have been busy delivering events on a virtual platform. We have been able to continue our Public Lecture and Research Seminar programme with great success and have delivered a number of virtual conferences and workshops online. Clients can benefit from the expertise of the Venues Team and in-house IT support to enable them to adapt their event to these changing times should the option of a virtual or hybrid event be required.

Accommodation

From top of the range en Suite accommodation to budget friendly options, Northumbria offers accommodation in a range of University residences. With almost 2,000 rooms, we can accommodate groups and individuals for long and short stay (subject to availability).

All of our residences are within easy reach of our campus and Newcastle city centre and are regularly used by conference delegates, summer school residencies and short-term stays for city events such as The Great North Run.

Our Claud Gibb accommodation with shared facilities, catering included and adjacent to suites of classrooms is ideal for summer schools. New Bridge street, less than 5 minutes from our Business and Law building is great for delegates attending a conference, with en Suite facilities it’s a great budget option.

Northumbria University takes the environment, sustainability, and Corporate Social Responsibility very seriously. In April 2020 Northumbria University was ranked 27th globally and 6th in the UK in the Times Higher Education’s (THE) sustainability Impact rankings confirming Northumbria’s globally leading position in sustainability and the strength of its support for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
